June 8, 2008: The lineup for the J.League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup quarter-finals has been completed after the last round of group games on Sunday.
Nagoya Grampus, Shimizu S-Pulse, JEF United Chiba and Yokohama F Marinos came out on top of the four groups, and were joined in the last eight by the two runners-up with the best record -- FC Tokyo and Oita Trinita.
These six take their place in the quarter-finals along with league champions Kashima Antlers and Nabisco Cup holders Gamba Osaka, who were given a bye due to their commitments in the Asian Champions League.
Before Sunday's sixth and final round of group games, only Nagoya had secured a place in the last eight, but this did not stop them inflicting a heavy defeat on Urawa Reds in Group A.
In front of over 35,000 spectators at Saitama Stadium 2002, Grampus won 5-1 against a Reds team that was already out of contention.
After Yoshizumi Ogawa had given Nagoya a 14th-minute lead, Reds equalised nine minutes into the second half with a fine strike by Olympic team hopeful Tsukasa Umesaki.
Nagoya manager Dragan Stojkovic sent on his "super sub" Keita Sugimoto in the 57th minute -- and the sturdy striker responded with a hat trick.
Sugimoto took his Nabisco Cup tally for the season to five with goals in the 61st, 76th and 87th minutes, and left back Shohei Abe added a spectacular long-range drive in the 71st minute.
In the other group game, Vissel Kobe were frustrated in their efforts to beat Kyoto Sanga FC at home and had to settle for a 1-1 draw -- not enough to qualify in second place.
Vissel were on course for victory when Kenji Baba's sweetly struck shot with the outside of his right foot put them in front on 63 minutes, but Yutaka Tahara pulled Kyoto level with a left-foot volley 13 minutes from time.
Nagoya finished with 15 points, followed by Kobe (10), Kyoto (6) and Urawa (2).
In Group B, FC Tokyo had their own hat trick hero in Sota Hirayama, who steered them to a 4-2 victory over Verdy in the Tokyo derby -- and into the last eight.
Hirayama, who will be hoping his goals revived his chances of a recall to the Olympic squad, scored a header in each half, either side of a close-range finish in the opening minute of the second half.
The much-travelled Nozomi Hiroyama had given Verdy the lead after only 11 minutes, but five minutes later Tokyo equalised when Brazilian centre forward Cabore beat the offside trap and flicked the ball over the advancing keeper.
In an eventful opening 20 minutes at National Stadium, Verdy regained the lead with a Hulk free kick, before Hirayama came to Tokyo's rescue.
In the other group game, Jubilo Iwata beat S-Pulse 2-0 in the Shizuoka derby with goals from the in-form strikeforce of Robert Cullen and Gilsinho, but it was not enough to take them through.
S-Pulse won a tight group with 11 points, on goal difference (+7) from FC Tokyo (+5). Jubilo were third with 10 points and Verdy last with only one point.
In Group C, JEF United left it late in beating fierce cup rivals Kawasaki Frontale 3-2 at Fukuda Denshi Arena.
After an own goal in the fourth minute had given JEF the perfect start, Kazuki Ganaha equalised for the visitors after 27 minutes.
Australian central defender Eddy Bosnar restored JEF's lead with a ferocious left-foot free kick from 30 metres in the 57th minute, but again Frontale drew level through Masaru Kurotsu 12 minutes later.
With Frontale dominating and looking for a winner, JEF broke on the counter for Brazilian striker Reinaldo to make it 3-2 seven minutes from time.
JEF's Chiba rivals, Kashiwa Reysol, also scored three times and picked up three points, but it was not enough to get them into the last eight.
Popo's double, including a penalty, and a late strike from fellow Brazilian Franca earned Reysol a 3-0 victory at Consadole Sapporo to leave them in second place.
JEF, the 2005 and 2006 Nabisco Cup winners, won the group with 12 points, followed by Reysol (9), Frontale (6) and Consadole (5).
Goals were scarce in Group D, where Yokohama F Marinos and Oita Trinita needed only one apiece to beat Albirex Niigata and Omiya Ardija, respectively, and qualify for the quarter-finals.
In front of over 28,000 fans at Niigata, Brazilian striker Roni's shot from the edge of the box on 55 minutes gave Marinos a 1-0 win and top spot, while a flying header from Shingo Suzuki in the 73rd minute earned Trinita a 1-0 win at home to Ardija.
Marinos finished the group with 12 points, followed by Trinita (11), Albirex (4) and Ardija (3).
The quarter-finals will take place over two legs on July 2 and August 6, with the following pairings for the first leg: Kashima Antlers v Shimizu S-Pulse, JEF United Chiba v Nagoya Grampus, FC Tokyo v Oita Trinita, Gamba Osaka v Yokohama F Marinos.
