1. J.League Division One (J1)
18 teams, all teams play each other once each home and away, 34 game season, 306 matches
2. J.League Division Two (J2)
18 teams, all teams play each other three times, 51 game season, 459 matches
*Promotion and Relegation between J1 and J2
- The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed teams in J2 shall be promoted to J1
- The 16th, 17th and 18th placed teams in J1 shall be relegated to J2
3. J.LEAGUE YAMAZAKI NABISCO CUP
(League Cup)
18 J1 teams. Preliminary groups followed by knock-out tournament. Matches played home and away except the final. Bye to knock-out stage for teams playing in group matches of the Asian Champions League.
4. FUJI XEROX SUPER CUP
Previous season's J. League champions vs. Emperor's Cup winners. Single game. Previous season's J. League runners-up play if the same team wins both trophies.
5. JOMO CUP 2009
J-All Stars team selected from players of all 18 J1 clubs against K-All Stars team selected from players of all 14 South Korean K. League clubs. The K. League hosts the match in 2009.

Competition for fostering first team squad players and players competing for first team squad places
- J. Youth Cup
Competition for clubs' U-18 teams
- J. League U-14
Competition for U-14 players of clubs' U-15 and U-12 teams, other clubs belonging to the Japan Club Youth Football Federation etc.
- J. League U-13
Competition for U-13 players of clubs' U-15 and U-12 teams, other clubs belonging to the Japan Club Youth Football Federation etc.
Other tournaments organised by the J. League
- Friendly matches held during the close season etc.
J. League clubs may charge for admission to friendly matches against other J. League or foreign teams during periods so designated by the J. League.
